San Diego Cops Busting Medical Marijuana Delivery Services

California NORML has received word that San Diego police are on the warpath against medical marijuana delivery services and providers. A local patient's group reports that there have been at least three busts in the last three days. Two were arrested on controlled buys after selling to an undercover narc with a valid 215 recommendation. A third was arrested in his/her home today. Police are said to be working on a list of delivery providers.
There are good reasons to question this misuse of police resources. San Diego is the largest metropolitan area in the state with no medical marijuana providers. The D.A. moved to close all of the county's dispensaries a couple of years ago. To replace them, numerous delivery services have arisen. The legality of delivery services has been seriously weakened by the state Supreme Court's Mentch decision restricting the use of the "caregiver" defense. However, the Attorney General's guidelines lay out a workable blueprint for the establishment of legal non-profit collectives. San Diego patients would be well served by the formation of local collectives. Patient advocates should press their local officials to allow collectives and end the county's zero-tolerance policy. In the meantime, they should demand that the S.D. police stop wasting resources by making life difficult for the many legal patients in San Diego who rely on delivery services.
